Getting to know music artist Sydmusiq

What’s your artist name and where are you  from?

My name is Sydmusiq and I’m from a small town about an hour outside of New York City.

Why do you love music?

I have always had a passion for music that dates back to childhood. My mom, who is puerto rican, always had some salsa playing around the house. Every Saturday morning my brother and I would be woken up to salsa music blasting and that was our cue to get up and get ready to clean. All of our family events, whether it be a birthday or a holiday, had some kind of music that set the tone. I think it was at that early age where I realized the effects of music and how it was able to communicate with everyone differently. I wouldn’t say that I knew I wanted to make music at that time, but I did know I wanted to affect peoples lives the same way music did.

What makes you different as a music artist?

What separates me from other artists is that I’m not afraid to step outside of my comfort zone. I feel like a lot of people “play it safe” because they are scared of what the outcome may be. I am 30 years old and at this point in my life I understand that creating music is personal expression. My music is not going to resonate with all people and that is completely fine. My goal is not for every single person on the planet to love my music. My goal is to empower and bring joy to the people who do like my music. I want the person who feels like they connect to what I’m saying to understand that they are not alone. Also, 99% of what I speak about in my music comes from an actual experience. I’m not just saying things just to say it or because I think its what people want to hear. I am speaking my truth.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

In 5 years I see myself with a huge catalog of music that helps people all over the world. I want people to hear my story through my music and want to know more. See, its one thing to make music for a club or a party, but when your music goes deeper than that and can actually pull at peoples emotions, I think thats when you are really making a difference.

What do you want to accomplish in life?

My ultimate goal in life is to provide a happy and healthy life for my family. Yes the houses, cars, and jewelry are all nice, but those things don’t really fulfill me. I want to be able to give my daughter anything she wants and take my wife anywhere she wants to go. What makes music great, is it can allow me to do all of that while changing the world at the same time. Affecting peoples lives in the process just makes the goal that much more appealing.

What do you bring to the music world?

I bring a more experienced point of view to to the world. Someone once told me that my music has “grown man bars” and that was one of the best complements I’ve received. At this point I’m not doing this to impress anyone. I do this because I love it and I know this can help others. I want to show the next talented kid who wants to make music that you don’t have to talk about violence or drugs. If you take what you really care about it and express that to the world, that is good enough. Too many rappers talk about “street” things that they don’t really know anything about. And the ones that do live that life, is that something you really think is needed in todays society? Theres already so much negative going on. Lets try to steer the conversation in a positive light.

What do you want to be remembered by?

I want to be remembered by my outlook on life. I’m someone who always tries to take the positive out of everything. Unfortunately, everyone goes through different levels of “down” days, but I don’t believe that should affect your overall view of life. The fact that you are simply still breathing is something to be grateful for. I think if more people took that approach, and saw the glass half full, the world would be a much better place.
